St George's Day is a great day to celebrate what's good about our country. We have strong and diverse communities in which people from all backgrounds contribute to making our society stronger.
We know that the overwhelming majority of people in the North East judge people by who they are and not the colour of their skin.
Our public services, communities, businesses and sports teams are all stronger for tackling racism and discrimination and judging people on their merits.
Sadly there will always be a tiny minority of people cynically trying to exploit situations for their own ends. The North East has repeatedly rejected those seeking to stir up hate and division against our region's ethnic minorities and we remain a BNP-free zone. More recently the violent, racist and criminal behaviour of the English Defence League threatens towns and cities.
We know our work against racism and discrimination is ongoing. Today, on St George's Day, we proudly stand together united in building a fairer and more equal society for all.
