Report from training day ‘Backs! 2005’

Sponsored by the HSE and supported by Browell Smith & Co

The Backs! 2005 health and safety forum training day was in general opinion the most well attended training day in the history of forum, with a massive delegation of around 120 participants!

It was very clear before the start of the day that there was going to be a ‘full house’, as approx 50 to 60 people had signed in, and received their packs, even before the official registration started.

Thanks to the documentation from the HSE, Browells, USDAW and Safety Media it was probably the most comprehensive information pack the forum has produced

As Chair of the forum mentioned in his opening remarks, it was fantastic to see the number of female reps in attendance.

The general consensus was that all of the speakers (Richard Bishop of the Health and Safety Executive, Doug Russell, the Health and Safety Officer for USDAW, Brian Freeman of Browells Solicitors and Northern TUC Regional Secretary, Kevin Rowan) were excellent, imparting the shocking statistics around the scale of back problems and furnishing the attendees with practical information on how to prevent back injuries. The delegates provided some very interesting, thought provoking questions for them to answer.

George Partridge, Health and safety Forum Chair, commented, 'The close working relationship we have with our colleagues at the HSE can only have a positive effect and we should seek to build on that relationship in more joint training days.'
