Protest at Swaziland High Commission

Issue date

Protest at Swaziland High Commission

Action for Southern Africa (ACTSA), in collaboration with trade unions and civil society, will be organising a protest in front of the Swaziland High Commission, 20 Buckingham Gate, London, at 13.00 on Thursday 16 April 2009 over the Swazi Government's failure to provide free primary education for children.

Protestors will call upon the Swazi government to cut wasteful expenditure such as lavish birthday celebrations planned for the King's birthday on 19 April. Although the Swazi constitution makes provision for free primary education for every Swazi child, the commitment has not yet been translated into concrete action. Civil society and trade unions have successfully taken up a legal case in this regard while the Swazi authorities have pointed to the lack of resources to meet the constitutional requirement.

ACTSA will be presenting a birthday card to the High Commission calling for free primary school education. If you would like to include a short message in the card, please send an e-mail by 13.00 Wednesday 15th April to mark.beacon@actsa.org
