Union Equal Pay reps can help to close the gender pay gap that exists across all employment sectors . The role can either be part of the local workplace rep’s role, or filled by someone who wishes to focus specifically on equal pay.

What does an Equal Pay rep do?

The extent of the role of the Equal Pay rep will vary between unions and workplaces depending on the bargaining structures. Some of their functions include:

  • Working as a member of the union bargaining team with expertise in equal pay
  • Negotiating with management on pay with emphasis on equal pay
  • Inspecting relevant pay data
  • Working with management in carrying out pay reviews
  • Taking up members’ equal pay issues

Training

The Equal Pay rep has the same rights as other reps providing pay bargaining is part of the Recognition Agreement with the employer. This includes the right to time off for training relevant to their duties.

The TUC provide a 2/3 day training course for equal pay reps designed to help reps to:

  • Understand how the pay gap occurs
  • Know what the law says about equal pay
  • Understand what pay reviews are and why they are necessary
  • Gain the skills to work in partnership with employers to carry these out
