MARCONI REDUNDANCIES: YET ANOTHER ATTACK ON THE BRITISH MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY tc "MARCONI REDUNDANCIES\: YET ANOTHER ATTACK ON THE BRITISH MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY"
Last Tuesday (4th September) Marconi announced 2000 redundancies following the 6000 previously announced. There was no consultation with the workforce or their recognised unions. Further, the top executives have contractual rights to excessive packages, regardless of performance. Congress condemns the management of Marconi who failed yet again to consult on redundancy announcements. This is in breach of the 1975 Collective Redundancies Directive and is a further reason why proper information and consultancy machinery with effective remedies should be brought into force. Congress demands that the Information and Consultation Directive is introduced into legal force as a matter of urgency.
Congress condemns the corporate greed and failure demonstrated by the Chairman and Chief Executive who have now resigned. Congress calls for the Company Law Review being undertaken by the DTI to have effective provisions for corporate governance that takes into account the interests of all the stakeholders, particularly the employees, who in the case of Marconi have been treated in a callous fashion.
Congress calls for the urgent intervention of the DTI to support all measures to ensure the survival of Marconi, and backs the Marconi unions, who are meeting the new Chief Executive on 14 September, in calling for the company to withdraw the threat of further compulsory redundancies.
