Case study - OurTime - A work-life balance project

The OurTime project was a partnership between PCS union and the Inland Revenue. It was a response to the challenge of delivering a more accessible service and extending opening hours to the public, whilst at the same time helping staff to have a good balance between work and personal life.

The project was a great success and all of its main aims were met:

  • To look at how working time arrangements can be developed to maximise work-life balance over the duration of an individuals working life
  • To extend accessibility and improve the quality of service provided
  • To develop partnership working and identify how this can practically be applied to a changing environment
  • To provide opportunities to up-skill staff and deliver life-long learning through the workplace. [see Inland Revenue case study]
  • To extend links with the community

The other central aim of the project was to develop a tool that could then be applied to the rest of the Inland Revenue and also, the hope is, a wider audience. The project developed a process which are explained in the online resource pack with resources, examples, a process map, tools and results.

The pack includes a:

  • staff survey to establish working time preferences
  • flexible working guide
  • details of a workshops to develop team based approaches to work organisation, training and organizing for flexibility and security
