Academies Bill Campaign Resources

Issue date

The TUC convened a meeting of the school workforce unions on 8th June to discuss the implications of the Academies Bill and it was agreed that an immediate priority was to campaign vigorously against the Bill at all levels and in particular to oppose the government's strategy of enabling schools rated as outstanding by Ofsted to acquire academy status early in the new school year. The meeting agreed a number of immediate actions, including producing a number of printed campaign resources jointly badged with the logos of all six school workforce unions (i.e. ATL, GMB, NASUWT, NUT, UNISON and Unite) and signed off by all their General Secretaries.

These resources include: a model resolution to be put to school governing bodies including a covering letter from staff/union reps; a model parent/carer petition to be put to school governing boards and a model letter to parents/carers from unions suggesting they use the petition; Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) briefings - one aimed at parents and another aimed at school staff; and, a model letter to union representatives in 'outstanding' schools that have registered an interest in academy status.
