TUC Northern Miscarriage & Pregnancy Loss in the Workplace: Policy & Reps Guidance

Pregnancy Loss in the Workplace: A Guide for Trade Union Reps

This guide has been developed by TUC Northern, in collaboration with the Miscarriage Association and Better Health at Work Award, to provide trade union representatives with the tools and knowledge to support workers who experience pregnancy loss.

Pregnancy loss, including miscarriage, affects a quarter of all pregnancies, yet many workplaces lack clear policies to support those affected. This guide aims to address that gap by offering practical advice on how to support colleagues with empathy, advocate for compassionate workplace policies, and ensure that workers have the time and space they need to recover.

The guide also introduces TUC Northern’s model policy, which calls for 10 days of paid leave for workers who experience a miscarriage and 5 days of paid leave for partners, a proposal not currently recognised in UK law. It includes detailed advice on navigating sensitive conversations, understanding legal rights, and promoting best practices in the workplace.

Download the guide today to help break the silence around pregnancy loss and ensure workers receive the support they deserve.
