Overview

This new two-day course will empower trade union reps in Wales to use the new Social Partnership and Public Procurement Act for the benefit of members. It will help build the relevant knowledge, skills and confidence to take forward effective social partnership in your own workplace.

The course will explore the challenges and opportunities presented by social partnership working and reps will have the opportunity to develop a practical action plan for their own workplace.

The course will help you to:

  • Understand how the Social Partnership & Procurement (Wales) Act encourages organisations delivering public services to work together
  • Explore the four underpinning principles of social partnership, socially responsible procurement, fair work and sustainable development
  • Consider the functions of the Social Partnership Council including the role of trade unions
  • Understand the Social Partnership Duty and the involvement of trade unions in setting well-being objectives in public bodies
  • Determine the organising opportunities for unions in engaging with the setting of well-being objectives, including how a public body employer aims to meet those objectives
  • Explore how unions can influence a public body employer’s procurement strategy through partnership

The course is available both online and in-person on the following dates:

  • 2 Wednesdays from 15th January - online (MS Teams) via Coleg Gwent Trade Union Studies Centre
  • 2 Tuesdays from 18th March - online (MS Teams) via Adult Learning Wales Trade Union Studies Centre

More dates for the summer to be announced soon - check back here for details.

Who should attend?

This course has been primarily designed for trade union reps working in Welsh public bodies who fall under the scope of the Social Partnership and Public Procurement (Wales) Act. A list of the public bodies covered by the Act can be found here: https://www.gov.wales/well-being-future-generations-act-essentials-html

The course may also be of interest to other reps who wish to learn more about social partnership working. Any rep from a TUC affiliate union is welcome to join the course  but please note a significant part of the course is specifically focused on the Act and how it applies to public bodies in Wales.
