Javier Milei was elected President on November 19 2023, promising to ‘take a chainsaw’ to the state, and he has done just that. But while his populist election language targeted the ‘parasites’ of the political elite, the true victims of his far-right policies have been ordinary Argentines. Milei’s government has managed to forcefully pass laws and implement measures that aim to radically diminish the rights of workers as well as those of other organised groups and vulnerable minorities, including women, students, pensioners, indigenous peoples and members of the LGBT+ community, and has pushed the country’s poverty rate to over 50%. Milei’s extremist ‘anarchocapitalist’ programme has set out to benefit transnational corporations and foreign interests, going back on long-won battles around employment rights, education, health, the right to organise and freedom of expression.
Join us for an event that brings together trade unionists from Argentina and the UK to reflect on the first year of Milei’s government, share strategies of resistance and discuss how challenging his misrule represents another important aspect of our movement’s fight against the global far right.
