Overview

Far right movements around the world are using hatred of women and LGBT+ people to further their agendas. But how can trade unions and working people fight back against this hate?

Join us to hear from a panel of international speakers who will share how they are fighting back against the far right in their contexts.

We will share best practice on anti-far right campaigning and organising, and continue to build on our movement’s anti-fascism work.

Speakers

  • Chair: Michelle Codrington-Rogers, Honorary Treasurer, NASUWT
  • Adam Rogalewski, Policy Officer - Health and Social Services, The European Federation of Public Service Unions (EPSU)
  • Walmir Siqueira, Coordinator of the National LGBTQIA+ Collective, CUT, Brazil
  • Carolina Vidal Lopez, Confederal Secretary for Women, CCOO, Spain
  • Naomi Connor, Co-Convener, Alliance for Choice, Northern Ireland
  • Quinn Roache, National Head of Equality and Policy, UCU, UK
  • Saorsa-Amatheia Tweedale, PCS, UK

Format of session

Attendees will hear from our international speakers about how Trade Unions and sister organisations are challenging the far right in their contexts. We will then hear from UK speakers about the far right’s use of LGBT+ hate and misogyny in the UK.

Key questions for discussion:

  • What are the most common far right, misogynistic or anti-LGBT+ narratives that union members and activists encounter in the workplace?
  • What is the purpose of far right misogynistic or anti-LGBT+ narratives from a far-right perspective?
  • How are unions organising against these far-right narratives in the workplace? How can we increase confidence of union reps to push back against them?
  • Is there a strong enough consensus among union members that equalities work is a core part of trade union activity? How can we build unity between equalities strands?
