In the run up to the 90^th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street and the main march and rally on Sunday 4 October, the TUC is organising a briefing and discussion about the 'ongoing international significance of the victory over fascism at Cable Street and how it was achieved' on Friday 2 October.

In 1936, at a time of social rupture, rising hatred and organised fascism in the UK, a broad coalition in the East End of London, comprising local people, the Jewish community, trade unionists, socialists, members of the Communist Party and Labour Party, and others, prevented Oswald Mosley's Black Shirts from marching through their streets. Famously, the fascists did not pass!

What happened that day was momentous. But celebrating that day is not a heritage event. Analysing how the broad coalition was assembled, the role of leadership, how the coalition functioned, the importance of networking and communications and what the messaging was, tells us important things that activists can apply to organising against the far right locally today.
