Today is Gender Pension Gap Day – the point of the year from which, if women received their pension at the same rate as men, they wouldn’t get another penny until January.
The headline pension announcement in today’s Autumn Statement – that the government is exploring a ‘lifetime provider model’ to allow workers to choose their pension scheme instead of their employer – is a gimmick.
The triple lock remains necessary and affordable, and has a vital role to play in making sure that today’s workers have the security of a decent state pension in future.
Trade unions have a straightforward vision of what the pensions system should deliver. We believe that all workers should have the opportunity to enjoy a retirement free from poverty in a lifestyle similar to the one they had in their working lives.
