Lots of different factors contribute to how happy we are at work. But there are some basics that no one should be without, including fair pay, manageable working hours and paid holidays.

The details of your pay, hours, normal working time and holidays should be included in your contract of employment. While the details will vary from job to job, you have certain legal rights which your employer must respect.

This section offers basic information on your rights regarding pay, holidays, working hours, sickness absence and flexible working.

But it shouldn’t be taken as legal or financial advice. If you’re having specific problems in one of these areas, you should seek individual advice from your union or a qualified adviser.

Common
questions
How much should I be paid?
Your contract of employment should contain a clear written term specifying your rate of pay and other pay elements, which are a matter of agreement between you and your employer.
Can my employer make deductions from my pay?
You have the right not to suffer 'unauthorised deductions from wages', but your employer may make lawful deductions from your pay...
How is holiday pay worked out?
Pay during holidays is calculated in the same way as a normal week’s pay. This simple but important principle was established after many years of litigating by trade unions, up to the level of the European Court of Justice. These cases have established that when on holiday, you should be paid the same pay as when you are working.
I have lost my National Insurance number. What do I do?
There are several ways to find out your NI number. You can check it online, find it on old documents such as payslips or P60's, or request it by post.
