The TUC is now calling for a windfall tax on bank profits. This can be done by raising the Bank Surcharge which directly taxes bank profits.

In response to recent windfalls, this paper presents some options for increasing taxes to raise additional revenue from banks – and to renew a policy of fairer shares that has been abandoned by Sunak. Our estimates for the revenue these options will raise are all very conservative. This is because they are based on OBR forecasts from March 2023 which have not been adjusted for the larger than expected bank profits that have come in over the course of this year.

A new deal: TUC statement on the spending review
The TUC’s Spending Round submission calls on the government to safeguard people’s jobs, livelihoods and the economy by ruling out a no-deal Brexit. The submission warns the Chancellor that he would not be able to prevent a no-deal Brexit doing further harm to public services already damaged by severe cuts.
