Overview

The Welsh language, and growth in its use, is a matter of equality, inclusion, fairness and linguistic justice for workers, workplaces, and communities across Wales.

It is a year since the launch of ‘Twf - TUC Cymru’s ‘Welsh Language at Work Charter’ – in the Eisteddfod in Wrexham, and many workplaces across Wales have already committed to its adoption. From North to South, West to East, and even from the top of Snowdonia to the Pembrokeshire coast, the support for using Welsh in workplaces in Wales is clearly demonstrated.
As the ‘blue stone’ region celebrates 850 years since the first ever Eisteddfod in Cardigan Castle in 1176, TUC Cymru celebrates alongside Carmarthenshire County Council, Ceredigion County Council, Pembrokeshire County Council and the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park because they have each committed to the Twf Charter and it’s four principles. The Southwest is therefore the first region in Wales to adopt Siarter Twf.

All of these organisations have committed to being inclusive bilingual workplaces as a matter of equality, fairness and linguistic justice and to grow, facilitate, promote, support, and strengthen the use of Welsh at work. As a result, they will be promoting and supporting more opportunities for every worker to use, learn and develop their Welsh language skills. This enables them to work in Welsh on a day-to-day basis and normalises the use of Welsh at work.
Come and listen to our panel discussing topics such as:

‘Why making a commitment to the Twf Charter, and working in social partnership – as trade unions and employers – is so important to facilitate, promote, and support growth in the use of Welsh at work? What are the advantages for workers and employers?
‘Committed to being inclusive bilingual workplaces, how will you work together proactively from day to day to support and deliver on linguistic justice at work?

How will you work to remove any barriers to speaking Welsh - such as lack of opportunity, negative attitudes, or erosion of daily use– because these can undermine speakers’ confidence and limit both their use of the language and the development of their skills?’

‘How will you jointly promote the value of bilingual skills and secure dignity and respect for Welsh speakers and learners?’
‘How will you work in partnership to deliver on fair and equitable access, conditions, opportunities, support and outcomes for workers to use and learn Welsh at work where they feel welcomed, represented and valued?’
