Overview

Developing Black Activists in Welsh Trade Unions

While Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic workers are more likely to be trade union members, they remain underrepresented as union reps, activists, staff, officers, political leaders and change makers.

We need to encourage, educate and support those interested in stepping up within our movement.

The TUC’s Anti-Racism Taskforce and the Welsh Government’s Anti-Racist Wales Action Plan have recognised this challenge.

Wales TUC is responding by organising a second edition of the successful Black Activist Development Programme. We hope the programme will help identify, motivate and talent-spot Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic members and activists.

Join our Black Activist Development Programme

Wales TUC’s Black Activist Development programme will run from 10 May 2024 with a 2.5-day residential weekend (accommodation and catering will be provided). It will include several face-to-face and online sessions over 6-8 months.

The programme will give you an opportunity to learn about the trade union movement’s structure, diversity, negotiating, priorities and leadership. It will also give you the confidence and tools to be able to get more involved in your union's organising, influencing and decision-making structures.

The programme starts with a 2.5 day residential weekend from 10 to 12 May in Cardiff.

This weekend session an essential start to the full programme.

Who should attend this event?

This event is for Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic trade union members interested in finding out more about Wales TUC’s Black Activist Development programme.

The event is also for anyone in any trade union who wants to find out how they can support Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic trade union activists and reps to play more of a role in their unions.

Why it’s time to support our Black activists in the Welsh trade union movement

Across our union affiliates and the TUC, we have some brilliant people on Race Committees and reserved seats. But we need new Black activists and reps challenging for positions at all levels. They will help us extend our diversity, deliver equity and make unions look more like and reflect the full interests of the workforce we seek to represent.

Do your bit to help us build a more inclusive, diverse Welsh trade union movement by helping us identify potential members who may be interested in our Black Activist Development programme and encourage them to join. Sometimes we can all do with a little nudge – a bit of support or encouragement to take the leap. Joining this event could be the first step someone takes to moving on to great things!
