WULF is an opportunity for you to learn through your union. Courses can take place from home, at work or in a college. You can even aim to study with a University.

The Wales Union Learning Fund (WULF) is provided by Welsh Government to help support union led adult learning in the workplace.

All Welsh workers have the opportunity to access the fund to take advantage of the support, advice and guidance and training offers provided through WULF projects.

Although WULF cannot fund University degree courses, learning such as Access courses can be supported.

  • Identifying innovative ways of utilising the skills, knowledge and experience of creative workers and enabling those that want to, to share these skills with others. This would include experienced trainers as well as those who want to know more about skills share and delivering training.
  • Sign-posting you to other available information and support both industry specific and generic training via our website.
  • Working with organisations to bring about cultural change in the creative sector so that it is a fair, inclusive and safe place to work where all have the ability to reach their full potential

A major part of our work at CULT Cymru is to help you identify your personal learning and professional development needs. We need to learn more about you, the skills you want to develop and the type of education and training you prefer, so that we can ensure you have access to high quality learning that is relevant and affordable..

FDA Project Offer

The project seeks to improve socio-economic diversity within public services in Wales by supporting workers to firstly ‘get in’ to sustainable fair work, and then to ‘get on’ in their careers in public services. We will achieve this with a bespoke employability programme, plugging recognised skills gaps and increasing collaboration across our target sectors. The project will establish a coaching and mentoring network and widen participation in generic skills learning that focuses on the changing world of work (AI and new technologies, hybrid working, carbon literacy and workforce wellbeing)

The project has two core strands. Firstly, to support young workers and workers from under-represented groups to successfully apply for new roles in the public sector, and secondly, to support existing public sector workers to develop key generic skills to progress their careers.  We deliver our work through employability courses, forums, conferences and workshops, using a mixture of wholly remote, classroom based and live streamed (hybrid) delivery.

The United Road Transport Union (URTU) represents drivers and warehouse staff who work within the road haulage, distribution, and logistics industries.

The Roads to Learning project is funded by the Welsh Government, through the Wales Union Learning Fund (WULF). The project’s main aim is to assist and guide individuals working in the transport and logistics sector in all aspects of learning.

Focusing on the South Wales area, the project develops opportunities in workplaces and for learners in the wider community. Working in road haulage, distribution, and logistics often means facing multiple barriers to accessing educational opportunities due to long shifts or unsociable work hours. Most of the courses offered through the project can be accessed remotely, and learning can be flexibly planned around work and personal commitments. Many of the opportunities are informal, bite-sized courses accessible from any mobile device and can be completed in a short period of time.

It is also possible to gain new knowledge, skills, and enhance employment prospects with short online CPD courses and nationally recognised qualifications. The project engages learners through online and face-to-face sessions, and learning events.

How does WULF work?

Trades unions bid for funding for up to three years in order to organise and or pay for learning opportunities for union members and their non-member colleagues.  The delivery of union led learning initiatives helps everyone up-skill and progress in their working and personal lives.

WULF projects are adaptable and meet the needs of industry, government and individuals by delivering union led Fair Work and Learning and Skills commitments.

WULF projects are managed and delivered by passionate, experienced union learning leaders.  These leaders; project managers and their teams have expert in depth knowledge of their sectors, they know how to deliver flexible, quality and relevant opportunities to a wide audience in a safe, fair way.

Projects can source online, blended, and hybrid courses, they are able to organise meetings, briefings and events, they are available to support and guide you in your lifelong learning journey.

Trades unions are represented in workplaces and industry sectors Wales wide.  Even if you aren’t a member there will be a trade union (and probably a WULF project), that covers your area of work.  Use our union finder tool to find out which union(s) work in your sector.

What are the benefits of learning with WULF?

According to research by Wavehill which we commissioned, the Wales Union Learning Fund during 2020-21 supported increased participation, better equality of access and enabled workers to progress in both their own personal development and in their careers.

In 2020-21:

  • Over 8,000 workers accessed workplace learning and learner satisfaction was up.
  • WULF helped workers to progress both in learning and in their work with 16 per cent of respondents saying that the learning resulted in a change of job role and 52 per cent saying it led to a pay increase.
  • WULF delivered for vulnerable workers and under-represented groups - 70 per cent of learners were women and 22 per cent of those surveyed reported to have physical, sensory, learning or mental health impairments.
