Commenting on today’s Step Change report ‘Wales in the Red’, Wales TUC General Secretary Martin Mansfield said:

“Today’s report shows in stark detail how austerity has pushed many families into financial misery.

“As working people face the longest squeeze on their incomes since the 1870s, debt has become an inevitability for many. When compared with prices over the period, wages in Wales have actually fallen on average by 12.5% since 2008.

“Taken together with slashed benefits, people are now struggling to fund the basics with arrears in rent, mortgages and energy bills all rising.

“Now more than ever, Britain Needs a Pay Rise.”
