Outcome summary

At the Sustainable Travel for All event we launched the Wales TUC's new trade union bargaining guide for greener, fairer and healthier travel.

The guide was launched by sustainable travel campaigner and guide author Chris Roberts. Chris spoke to introduce the guide and explain why sustainable travel is such an important issue for trade unionists.  Chris outlined why the way we currently travel is such a problem, not only for the environment, but for our health, for equality and for the economy. Read the guide to find our more and learn about how you can make positive changes in your own workplace. You can also download Chris' presentation slides below.

Next, we heard from Wales TUC policy officer Nisreen Mansour. Nisreen gave a preview of some new research that the Wales TUC has commissioned from the Centre for Cities, looking at the role that regional and national transport policy can play in urban areas and the challenges facing public transport. More details about the research will be shared on this page once the report is formally launched on 21st November.

Both Chris' and Nisreen's presentations generated lots of interesting discussion with reps sharing experiences of the issues in their own workplaces and communities. The group discussed barriers, issues of fairness and shared ideas about how we, as trade unionists can try to bring about positive change at both policy and workplace level and ensure that these changes are worker-led and offer members a meaningful choice when it comes to sustainable travel options.

This Greener Workplaces Network event was co-chaired by network member Helga Dixon and Jo Rees (Wales TUC).

Overview

Sustainable travel for all – a Wales TUC Greener Workplaces Network event

Can greener travel be fair, affordable and accessible for all?

Join us at this event, where we’ll be looking at the issues surrounding the move to greener modes of travel, what these mean for workers and why it is an important issue for trade unions.

As part of the event, we’ll be launching our newly updated bargaining guide for reps on negotiating for sustainable travel at work. We’ll look at trade union campaigns and bargaining strategies including:

  • How can we support and enable members who want to choose more sustainable modes of transport?
  • What do fair workplace travel plans look like?
  • Unite’s campaign to save our bus routes – why buses are a vital part of a just transition
  • Introduction of electric car fleets in workplaces – what are the issues for workers?
  • What is the role of regional and national transport policy?

Speakers:

  • Chris Roberts – Sustainable travel campaigner and Wales TUC bargaining guide author
  • Alan McCarthy – Regional Officer, Unite the Union
  • Mark Holt – Green/H&S rep, Communication Workers Union (CWU)
  • Nisreen Mansour – Policy Officer, Wales TUC

As well as hearing from guest speakers, the event will include opportunities for participants to network, join in discussion and share good practice.
