The TUC's new unionism project supports unions in increasing membership, building effective workplace organisation, recruiting and training more workplace reps - making a real difference for union members in the workplace and beyond.

As well as helping develop unions' existing membership, we focus on growth into new, less-unionised sectors of the economy, where workers have little experience of unions, but much to benefit from them. The project aims to make union membership appeal more especially to women, young workers, black workers and people on part-time, short-term or agency contracts.

Thanks to the project, and more importantly the efforts of unions themselves, there are clear signs that unions are on the way back up. Two-thirds of TUC affiliated unions have grown since 1997, and in a sharp upward trend in new collective bargaining deals, 500 companies drew up new recognition agreements last year.

This site will give you more information about the work of the project and, most importantly, how you can get involved in helping to organise the unorganised!

Congress fringe 'Reaching out: organising young workers'

The case for organising and supporting young workers is increasingly urgent as youth unemployment reaches alarming levels and young people at work face increasing job insecurity, vulnerability and low pay. Yet trade union membership among young people remains low. This event looks at the ways trade unions are taking on the challenge of organising and empowering young members and how the TUC and unions can work together to promote the benefits of trade union membership to young people both in the workplace and wider community. This event will also showcase the winning entries to the TUC's 60 Second Ads contest, the TUC competition inviting budding film makers to submit 60 second films promoting the benefits of trade unions. Refreshments will be available.

The TUC has welcomed confirmation in a DTI report published today that union density rose in the UK in 2003 for the first time since the Labour Force Survey started to measure it in 1989, but has warned that there should be no complacency by unions as it reveals that TUC membership fell last year by 250,000.
