Commenting on the announcement made today (30 October) by the Welsh Government Shavanah Taj, Wales TUC General Secretary, said:

“We strongly welcome Welsh Government’s introduction of two schemes to support lower paid workers to self-isolate. Trades unions have called for both these initiatives to be introduced because the UK Government has kept Statutory Sick Pay at such an extremely low level, despite this clearly undermining efforts to stop the spread of coronavirus.

“The main levers for income support still sit with UK Government, but we support any action by Welsh Government which addresses the gaps in UK schemes which leave lower paid workers facing the impossible choice of extreme financial hardship or breaching self-isolation rules.

“Welsh Government is not just supporting workers by introducing this, it’s supporting lower-paid workers in particular and this is absolutely critical at this time.”
