Wales TUC General Secretary Shavanah Taj has made the following statement in response to the EHRC’s announcement on launching an inquiry into the impact of coronavirus on ethnic minorities.

We welcome the EHRC’s announcement that they are launching an inquiry into the impact of coronavirus on ethnic minorities. Wales TUC has been vocal about the impact of the coronavirus on BME workers and communities since the beginning of this crisis.

We look forward to working with EHRC Wales to raise issues of systemic, structural racism and inequality we see in Wales today.

It is important that this inquiry does not just focus on the impact of coronavirus on BME workers. It also needs to look at the wider socio economic inequalities and structural racism. This includes considering:

  • Race pay gap and employment gap
  • Access to housing
  • Health inequalities
  • Public services
  • Access to education
