International Workers’ Memorial Day 2017 - North West events

“Remember the dead – Fight for the living”

On Friday 28th April across the world, millions of workers, unions and families stand together. We remember all those killed at and by work and we fight for the living because no-one should ever die just for going to work: Stop it employers/government, you’re killing us!

Around 51,500 deaths, over 621,000 injuries and millions made ill by work in GB every year.

Almost all work deaths are due to employers’ mismanagement., and inequality and discrimination at work mean that the most vulnerable workers—the poorest, women, young , ethnic minority, migrant, LBGT workers— are at more risk of being made ill, injured or killed due to work.

Employers must stop unsafe & unfair work, combat inequality & discrimination. All workers must have good health and safety, whoever they are, whatever they do and wherever they work.

There are various events taking place on the day including:

Liverpool Commemoration.

This will be at 11:30am In the South Piazza of Georges Dock Building, Pier Head. Liverpool L3 1DD. It will then be followed by speeches and seminars at 1-2pm with Unite the Union in Jack Jones House, 2 Churchill Way. Liverpool L3 8EF .

International Worker Memorial Day Rally:

 #An Injury to one is an injury to all.

There is also a rally taking place at 12.00 to 13.00pm In Lincoln Square, Brazennose St. Manchester, M2 5LN.

The rally is being held by Joint North West UNIONS, GM Hazards/FACK.

It will be hosted by Lynn Collins, regional secretary at North West TUC NWTUC; with music by Claire Mooney.

Speakers will include: TU Safety Reps; Tracey Seward, Families Against Corporate Killers; Greater Manchester Asbestos Victims Support Group; Debbie Abrahams, Shadow Sec State for DWP, Andy Burnham, Labour Mayoral candidate., Leo McCann, Trauma in Emergency workers.

The rally will also involve reading the names of those killed at work; Laying of wreaths, and a one minute silence.

Everyone is welcome especially families of those killed at work. Banners & wreaths will be generously accepted.

Following this everyone is welcome to visit the exhibition at the Peoples History Museum at 13.00pm.
