Getting training will make your role as a rep easier and help you make a real difference in your workplace.

Training is crucial for all trade union representatives, whatever role they play. Training not only gives workplace representatives the skills and confidence they need to do their job, trade union courses can also be a great way of sharing experiences with other activists.

Being a union rep is important and rewarding but it isn't always easy. Unions, government and employers know that training can help a great deal. The law entitles union reps to paid time-off to attend TUC or union training courses.

Agreements on time off for training

While it is important that legal requirements are met, many employers and unions believe that a written agreement is the best way of handling time off requests. For more information on the rights of ULRs and union members, see the ACAS Code of Practice - Time off for trade union duties and activities.

Finding a course

TUC Education offers high-quality accredited training to union representatives and professionals through a network of colleges and across the UK. Online learning and initiatives such as eNotes have helped to widen participation to hard-to-reach workers. Find a course for you.

Interactive guides

It’s hard to keep up to date with the key issues facing your members in the workplace. That’s why TUC Education developed interactive guides – they’re a great resource to help keep you up to speed with key workplace issues. Each interactive eNote is a mix of text, video and quizzes. In not much more time than it takes to have a cuppa you will gain a good understanding of the subject. Plus you can share thoughts and ideas with other users online.
