The TUC has today (Tuesday) paid tribute to the former General Secretary of the Fires Brigade Union (FBU), Ken Cameron, who has died at the age of 74.

As well as leading the FBU, Ken served on the TUC’s General Council for nearly 20 years.

TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“Ken was one of the greatest union leaders of his generation.

"He was the very essence of an intelligent trade unionist, always able to see the bigger picture and champion the cause of all working people.

"When the going got tough Ken was the kind of man you'd want by your side. Determined but always with a kindly twinkle in his eye, Ken could find humour in the most unpromising of circumstances.

"A committed socialist and internationalist, he inspired respect from fellow union leaders, employers and politicians of all stripes alike.

“I will always be grateful to Ken for the support and encouragement he gave me and many others. His commitment to equality inside the movement, as well as beyond, never wavered.

“Our thoughts are with his family, and with his comrades in the union that he led and loved."
