The TUC and the NUS will today (Thursday) sign a new campaigning partnership which will form the basis of joint working between the trade union and student movements over the next year and beyond.

The partnership will be signed at Congress House for the TUC by General Secretary Frances O'Grady and for NUS by new National President Toni Pearce (who is due to speak at the TUC conference in Bournemouth next month).

As well as highlighting the organisations' shared belief in social justice, collective organisation and democratic participation, the partnership sets out ten ways in which the TUC and NUS will work together and support each other's campaigns.

These include campaigning together for a living wage, for high quality training and employment rights for apprentices, and to promote unions to students and young workers.

TUC General Secretary Frances O'Grady said: 'The trade union and student movement share many challenges and also an ambition to see a fairer, more equal society. This new partnership aims to increase the ability of both organisations and their affiliates and members to campaign more effectively together.'

NUS National President Toni Pearce said: 'The new partnership we have forged gives a firm indication of our shared commitment to working together to ensure our members can thrive. The student and trade union movements have always had a special bond, and I am delighted to be renewing our working relationship today in the name of a fairer, more prosperous society.'
