TUC South West

Around half a million workers in the South West are members of a trade union. The South West TUC represents their voices to improve workers’ rights and promote decent jobs in the region. The region has a large and diverse economy. It offers the best and worst of work with much of the region relying on low pay. We want great jobs for everyone with decent pay, access to skills development and employment that ensures good health and well-being at work.

It would take the average South West employee 51 years before the earned one highly-paid banker's annual bonus payout - a full working lifetime. Many areas in the region fare worse particularly in coastal and rural communities, indicating a great need for better pay and quality jobs.

Councils in South West are spending £370m a year less on key services than in 2010

We reveal the impact of government cuts on each local councils, with places like Exeter spending almost half what they were on key local services compared to 2010. With the biggest cuts hitting Labour-led authorities the most. Large-scale investment in local services is urgently needed if we are to tackle rising poverty among working families.

Decade of low pay has driven Cornish families deep into debt

The South West is home to some of the poorest areas in the country. So it's no surprise that as more working families feel the pinch, the number of insolvencies across the region continues to rise. In Cornwall, young people are the hardest hit as low wages and limited opportunities continue to bite. Overall, UK household debt has increased by a third since 2010 to a new record of £14,200.
