TUC condemns arrest of trade union lawyer in Swaziland

Issue date

TUC General Secretary Frances O'Grady has joined trade union leaders from around the world in condemning the arrest in Swaziland of trade union lawyer Thulani Maseko. In her letter to the Swaziland High Commissioner in London, O’Grady argues that the detention of Maseko by armed police officers on 17 March contravenes ILO Convention 87 on freedom of association, as well as the general right to freedom of expression. Maseko was arrested for having written an opinion piece in the Nation Magazine about the detention of Bhantshana Gwebu, Chief Government Vehicle Inspector and a member of the National Public Servants and Allied Workers Union.
