Welfare Conference - unions at the heart of the Welfare State

Issue date

This conference is aimed at trade unions, trade union branches, trades union councils, TUC Unemployed Workers Centre staff and users.

Unemployed and disabled people are at the sharp-end of this Austerity Coalition’s attacks. The trade union movement knows well that the demonisation and impoverishment of benefit claimants is aimed at undermining the safety net of Welfare State creating fear and vulnerability at work and in the job market.

The Zero-Hour, Pay Day Loan economy is underlined by sanctions and Workfare, harassing claimants into low paid, insecure and exploitative work. The 6 week wait to claim Universal Credit forces people to stay there. Benefits are increasingly paid to the working-poor, as subsidy for low pay. Against this background there has been an increase in disability hate crime and mental ill-health depression and suicide is widespread in our communities.

The conference will host workshops that address major policy debates with the aim of producing a Charter for Welfare. The conference will explore ideas for collective action that mobilises in communities and workplaces across the country.

The conference is free. To register for the Welfare Conference on 27 February please click on the link below.
