As world leaders gathered in London for the G20 Summit, trade unionists from G20 countries met at the TUC to lobby them. When International Monetary Fund (IMF) Director Dominique-Strauss Kahn came to talk to the global trade union movement at Congress House, he was presented with a 130,000 name online petition calling for the IMF to use its increased resources to boost green jobs as a sustainable way to combat the recession.
The petition was gathered in just three days with the backing of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) and online campaigners Avaaz. Other world leaders to meet with trade unionists included British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Australian PM Kevin Rudd, Presidents Lula and Motlanthe of Brazil and South Africa, and World Trade Organisation Director Pascal Lamy.
