We welcome the opportunity to engage with this consultation and present our views on the most effective way to stamp out worker exploitation in the umbrella industry. The TUC believes that the only effective way to prevent the exploitation of workers by umbrella companies is to prohibit recruitment agencies and employers from using them.

Levelling up at work - fixing work to level up across the UK
This report argues that poor quality work is a key cause of broader inequality across the country. Unless we reduce the numbers of people in jobs that are in low-paid, insecure and offer no route to better quality work, little will change in the lived experience of a significant number and proportion of people across every part of the UK. We cannot level up the country without levelling up at work.

Restoring trust in audit and corporate governance - TUC response
Our submission focuses on a proposal to change the word ‘employee’ to ‘workforce’ throughout the Companies Act, so that its requirements cover the whole workforce, rather than only directly-employed employees as at present; reform of directors’ duties to remove shareholder primacy and require directors to promote the long-term success of the company as their primary aim; reform of board composition to require that worker directors comprise one third of the board at companies with over 250 workers; and sets out the TUC’s response to a number of the consultation questions.
