Overview

Join us at this in-person event which is being organised by TUC Cymru in collaboration with the Trade Union Clean Air Network (TUCAN) and the Hazards Campaign. It will bring together health and safety reps, green reps and other trade unionists with an interest in health, safety and the environment.

The event will be an opportunity to discuss the health and safety risks to workers stemming from climate change and environmental problems, such as the risks posed by extreme weather and air pollution, amongst others. The event will look at what needs to happen to develop policy with workers to tackle these issues and keep workers safe in a changing climate.

Speakers will include:

  • Shavanah Taj, General Secretary, TUC Cymru
  • Janet Newsham, Chair, Hazards Campaign
  • Graham Petersen, Coordinator, Trade Union Clean Air Network (TUCAN)
  • John Booth, Industrial Officer, PCS Union
  • Plus, other speakers from Welsh Government, trade unions, environmental organisations and academics tba

The event will feature a panel discussion and will include opportunities to hear from experts, learn from each other and gain valuable knowledge to enhance your role as a safety or green/environmental rep. It will include a networking lunch. Following the event, we will be working with TUCAN to produce a new resource pack to support reps in taking action in the workplace.

The event will include two panel sessions with a lunch break in between:

Air pollution - a hidden killer and cause of ill health – panel discussion 1
In the UK more than 40,000 people a year will die as a result of air pollution.  And it’s not just about traffic fumes - many workers are exposed to toxic indoor air as well in offices and factories. But because the problem of indoor air pollution is invisible, many workers are not aware of what they are being exposed to or the impact it may be having on their health. But the reality for most workers is that the air they are exposed to at work and on their journey to work is polluted. What action should be taken to clean up our air and how can we raise awareness of this invisible threat?

Extreme weather and workplace health and safety – panel discussion 2
Workers are exposed to the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and many are being put at risk. It is unlikely that the red weather warning 'danger to life' alerts we received in Wales ahead of Storm Darragh last winter will be the last. And it's not just storms, there is concern about the increased risk of heat waves, flooding, landslips and wildfires. But what is being done to protect workers in this changing climate? What can be done in the workplace and what action do we need to see at a Wales level to ensure workers' health and safety is considered in 'climate adaptation' policy?
