This is the essential course for all new trade union health and safety representatives (or those who have not yet received training).
It is designed to help build your skills, knowledge and confidence for your work as a health and safety rep, including:
This course will take 60 hours to complete. This is made up of ten classroom lessons, usually one day a week.

Union representatives who would like to attend TUC courses during working time should first ask their employer for time off with pay.
Under the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992 and the Safety Representatives and Safety Committee Regulations 1977, recognised union representatives, and safety representatives have a legal right to reasonable time off with pay to attend courses approved by the TUC or their trade union.
Guidance towards establishing what constitutes reasonable time off can be found in the ACAS Code of Practice (pdf).
Union Representatives who find difficulty in obtaining paid time off to attend courses should seek assistance from their senior union representative or a full time union officer.
