This Sunday (July 7th) in Tredegar the Wales TUC will lead celebrations of the life of Aneurin Bevan as the main sponsors of Bevan Day 2019.

Speakers at Bevan Day 2019 will include:

  • Wales TUC President Ruth Brady
  • Shadow Brexit Secretary Keir Starmer MP
  • First Minister Mark Drakeford AM
  • Health and Social Services Minister Vaughan Gething AM
  • Unison Wales Regional Secretary Tanya Palmer

The annual Bevan Day event, organised by Tredegar Town Council, will mark the culmination of the Bevan Festival. The Festival run from 1 to 7 July with events to honour the memory of the founder of the NHS.    

Wales TUC General Secretary, Martin Mansfield, said:

“The Wales TUC is hugely proud to be the main sponsor of this year’s Bevan Day. The enormous success of last year’s event showed just how much Bevan’s legacy continues to inspire people.

“Nye Bevan was a proud, life-long trade unionist. He fought for a better deal for workers. Trade unions in Wales are continuing that fight today. 

“We’re looking forward to joining people on Sunday to celebrate Bevan’s remarkable life and achievements”      

Sunday’s programme will begin with the Wales TUC leading a trade union banner march from Bevan’s former home in Charles Street to Bedwellty Park.

Following the march there will be a full afternoon of activities at Bedwellty Park including speeches, debating competitions, and musical performances from the Can Aderyn Singers and the Tredegar Town Band.

There will also be a wide range of stalls, stands and activities for all ages.

The Wales TUC stand will give attendees the opportunity to discuss the campaign to make Wales a fair work nation, and efforts to tackle the rise of the far right. Wales TUC staff will also be available to provide information to anyone looking to find out more about the trade unions can help them at work.       

Editors note

The trade union banner march will begin at Charles Street, Tredegar at 11am and will end in Bedwellty Park.

Speeches will start at 12pm at the Bandstand in Bedwellty Park.
