The horrific event which took place in Southport on Monday 29 July has left us all in shock. Our continuing thoughts are with the families, friends and communities who have lost loved ones and who were injured.

Where many rightly stood in peaceful solidarity with the people of Southport following the event, we know that others sought to use it to divide and spread hate - based on mistruths, islamophobia and false information. Completely disrespecting the memories of those whose lives were so tragically cut short.

We have seen the far right take to the streets within our local towns and cities.  We have seen attacks on Police and emergency service workers as well as targeting Muslim communities and migrants.

We must not allow the lies and division to prevail. The answer is not to meet violence with violence and we will not accept the whipping up of hate and fear.

Whilst the far right violence across the region has cast a dark shadow, we have seen some of the best of humanity shine through in response.

Once again, it is a diverse range of front-line workers and community activists who have stepped up to repair the damage – material, physical and emotional:

Our emergency service workers who rushed to danger to provide life-saving care.

Our public service workers who continue to provide ongoing care and support.

And our community organisations who have stepped up to help and provide counselling and support.

Alongside so many other individuals, local businesses and organisations who have given their time and expertise, they all deserve our gratitude.

These workers have discharged their duty professionally, diligently and with compassion for their community at a time when their own safety is at risk.

As trade unions, we will continue to work with our members in workplaces across the region, to provide practical support and solidarity and defeat the narrative of hate.

We will continue to promote and work with Anti racist, migrant and community organisations and provide local and regional support and solidarity wherever it is needed. Racism and division have no place in our communities.

Unity is our strength, and we will stand firm in collective action to promote hope over hate against those that aim to divide different workers and communities against each other.
