Wales TUC is confirming that Shavanah Taj will speak at the Stand Up to Racism march and rally in Cardiff on Saturday 16 March 2019.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to take to the streets of London, Cardiff and Glasgow to join the Stand Up to Racism marches, which will all assemble at 11 o'clock.

The UK marches are part of an unprecedented partnering of anti-racist and anti-fascist campaigners for demonstrations in at last 22 countries and 60 cities around the world under the banner#WorldAgainstRacism.

The UK marches will bring together people united in opposition to the threat of the far-right in the UK. And they will show solidarity with people organising against the spread of the far-right globally, including racist leaders such as Donald Trump, Victor Orban and Jair Bolsonaro.

Wales TUC is encouraging trade union members to take part in the UK marches and to bring their friends.

Shavanah Taj, Wales TUC President, stated her support:

“On behalf of Wales TUC, I’m pleased to support this demonstration of unity against racism and fascism.

An ideology which we thought we had defeated is threatening a return. We're choosing to stand up against racism and hate wherever we find it. We’re confident in our common values of respect and equality for all people in Wales.

I’m honoured to be speaking at this year’s march in Cardiff. The Trade union movement will not tolerate hate and discrimination!”

Rhianydd Williams, Wales TUC Equality Officer, also stated her support:

“Over the past few years, we’ve seen a shocking rise in attacks against Muslim and Jewish people, against gay and disabled people and against refugees and migrants too. Those who are trying to divide us and stir up hate blame migrants and minorities for problems the UK Government have created through years of continued austerity or bad bosses, always on the look-out for corners to cut and cheaper labour.

As trade unionist we stand up to racism and hatred and we believe strongly in values of justice, equality and fairness. The Wales TUC supports the UN Anti-Racism Day 2019 and we continue to be a leading voice against racism to ensure that we are not divided and have a just and fair society”
