Commenting on new official figures published today (Wednesday), which show the number of people on zero-hour contracts as their main job at 901,000 and little changed from a year ago, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“Nobody should have to rely on a zero-hours contract for their main job. But over 900,000 workers remain stuck in that situation.

“Most people on zero-hours contracts want the security of guaranteed hours.  They are not on them by choice.

“The Prime Minister missed a huge opportunity to ban unfair zero-hours contracts earlier this month. Her feeble response to the Taylor Review means zero-hours workers will remain at the beck and call of bad bosses.”

Editors note

- TUC polling published in December revealed that two-thirds (66%) of zero-hours workers would rather have a contract with guaranteed hours. Just one in four zero-hours workers (25%) say they prefer being on zero-hours contracts.

- The poll showed that the main reason people are on zero-hours contracts is because it is the only type of work available to them.

- The Trades Union Congress (TUC) exists to make the working world a better place for everyone. We bring together more than 5.5 million working people who make up our 49 member unions. We support unions to grow and thrive, and we stand up for everyone who works for a living.
