Picturehouse Strike - York Solidarity Event
The first speaker was Kelly, sacked from the Ritzy Picturehouse, who spoke passionately on the treatment of workers in the cinema in relation to their dispute calling for a Real Living Wage and better maternity, paternity and sick pay conditions; as well as the deskilling of the staff in running the cinema, reduced to performing more and more menial work.
Andy, currently working at the Oxford Picturehouse spoke on the limited success of a hypothetical mass boycott. He stressed that, though it may work for larger Picturehouses, the effect of a boycott on a smaller one may simply be a reduction in shifts for workers. Victory must, he said, come ultimately from the employees and from the success of the strike.
With more and more interest in the strike action growing across the country, there is hope for victory in the dispute yet.
