Commenting on today’s (Tuesday) inflation figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady said:

“We might be in a new year, but there’s no relief to Britain’s living standards squeeze.

“Inflation continues to outstrip wages leaving household budgets stretched to breaking point.

“The government should be doing everything it can to tackle the pay crisis. That means new investment to boost growth, a hike in the minimum wage, and better support for trade unions to negotiate the pay rises workers have earned.”

TUC analysis published last month showed that the UK will have the worst wage performance of any advanced economy in 2018.

Editors note

- The Trades Union Congress (TUC) exists to make the working world a better place for everyone. We bring together more than 5.5 million working people who make up our 49 member unions. We support unions to grow and thrive, and we stand up for everyone who works for a living.
