Commenting on the latest employment figures published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) today (Tuesday), which show over 46,000  job losses in the East Midlands since February, TUC Midlands Regional Secretary, Lee Barron said:

“These figures demonstrate what we’ve known all year – that the East Midlands is in the midst of a jobs crisis.

“We can’t afford to wait. Government and local stakeholders – politicians, business and unions - have to work together to create jobs.

“Our region has huge strengths. Located at the heart of the UK, innovative universities, world class manufacturing and biosciences we should be able to prosper. With imaginative leadership we can create huge numbers of jobs in green transport and infrastructure and by unlocking public sector vacancies. We have to seize the nettle.

“Unfortunately, confusion around the future of the furlough scheme means many workers are losing their jobs unnecessarily. We need a guarantee that support will continue.

And people who have lost their jobs must get the support they need to make ends meet. We need an urgent boost to universal credit or many face being plunged into poverty.”
