A number of events have been organised by organisations across the North West to mark International Worker’s Memorial Day on Thursday 28th April. These are the events we have been told about. 

Remember the Dead. Fight for the Living. #IWMD16

Blackburn – Organised by Blackburn & Districts Trades Union Council. Thursday 28th April, commemoration will take place at 12:30pm by the Memorial Tree at the Sudell Cross end of Northgate, Blackburn.

Barrow – Organised by Barrow Trades Council. A street stall on Wednesday 27th April, at the Workers’ Statue, Dalton Road, Barrow-in-Furness from 11am -1pm.

Liverpool – Organised by UCATT. Thursday 28th April, assemble at 11:45am. At the UCATT Memorial, Hunter Street, Liverpool. Speakers include Mayor Joe Anderson, TUC & Labour Party Representatives, Billy Parry, UCATT.

Skelmersdale – Organised by South West Lancashire Unemployed Centre. Thursday 28th April, starting at 111:30am, a Miners Sculpture dedication and memorial service at Quarry Bank Gardens, Ormskirk Road, Skelmersdale, WN8 9AL.

Liverpool – Organised by Merseyside Trades Union Council/Bob Tressell Festival. Thursday 28th April at South Piazza of St Georges Dock Building (corner of Mann Island/The Strand), Pier Head, L3 1DD. 11am – rally with speakers TBC.

2pm – wreath laying at Walton Prison, the site of Robert Noonan’s grave.

7pm – 11pm - The Adelphi Britannia Hotel Peace Suite - Bob Tressell festival.  New 'Still Ragged' documentary film introduced by Producer Dan Draper.  New music - compilation CD 'Tressell & Me' by Alun Parry.  Two scenes from the Ragged Trousered Philanthropist - special performance from Maxine Peake.  Speakers to be confirmed.

Manchester – Organised by Greater Manchester Hazards. Thursday 28th April, at Albert Square, Manchester. 12pm – 1pm. Speakers include Kevan Nelson UNISON, Ian Hodson BFAWU, Emma Runswick BMA, John Morgan NUT, Joanne Hill FACK, Gary Keary FBU and others.  

Preston - Saturday 30th April: Meet on Preston Flag market at 11.30am with a musical build up to a minutes silence at noon followed by speeches. There will then be a march with banners through Preston to lay wreaths at the Lund Street memorial in remembrance of those who lost their lives through work.

Bolton - Sunday 24th April, meet 11am at UNISON office for refreshments, walk to Victoria Square for 11.45am  Rally with speakers, balloon release, laying of carnations at  WMD stone.

Chorley - Friday 29 April: There will be a memorial service at the Unite workers memorial tree in Astley Park at 18:00. Meet at the park gates, Park Road at 17:45pm.
