"Immigration - What's the Story?" Show Racism the Red Card screening

The issue of immigration is never far from the headlines, commentary is often misleading, dangerously simplistic and feeds into a worrying narrative of anti-immigration sentiment. Our Education Workers have noticed this trend in their workshops and are increasingly hearing racist ideas and attitudes expressed towards migrant communities.
 
Our response was to develop an educational film, elevating the voices of people who have moved from one country to another, to try and dispel some of the popular myths and provide an alternative view.
 
On Tuesday 8th December at 6.00pm, Show Racism the Red Card (SRtRC), will be holding a special screening of the campaign’s new education film – ‘Immigration: What’s the Story?’. The event will take place at the National Football Museum in Manchester’s Urbis Building and be sponsored by key SRtRC supporters UNISON, who keenly support both the film and SRtRC’s wider educational work.

The film features features a wide range of people discussing their own journeys and experiences of living & working in the UK. These migrant voices are supported by testimonies from professional footballers & celebrities including Gary Lineker, Manchester United & England’s Chris Smalling, Sunderland AFC & England’s Jermain Defoe & Chelsea & England’s Eniola Aluko. 
 
SRtRC have produced educational films as part of their anti-racism work with young people and adults throughout the organisation’s history, and the latest film explores the issues surrounding immigration and attempts to challenge some of the common myths and misconceptions that can lead to the development of prejudice.  
 
The special screening will be attended by Gordon Taylor OBE, Chief Executive of the PFA, as well as Kevan Nelson, Regional Secretary of UNISON North West, Lynn Collins, Regional Secretary of TUC North West, Liz Cameron, UNISON delegate and Founder and Chief Executive of Show Racism the Red Card, Ged Grebby. Paula Barker, Regional Convenor of UNISON North West will be chairing the event. A range of additional guests will also be in attendance. 
 
Show Racism the Red Card Chief Executive, Ged Grebby said: “At SRtRC, we firmly believe that negative attitudes towards people are being shaped by the current political debate surrounding immigration and in particular the media’s coverage of the issue.”
 
“In response to the approach from certain media outlets and some politicians, and the attitudes we have heard expressed in the classroom, SRtRC has developed a new educational film which can be used to combat some of the misinformation, disinformation, fear and scapegoating which currently frames the issue of immigration.”
 
“The film uses the role model status of professional footballers and sports people alongside migrant voices from a variety of different backgrounds to explain the differences behind individual’s motivations for moving and to share human experiences of both prejudice and acceptance”

There will be an introduction to the issues, a showing of the film, followed by an hour of networking (canapés & drinks available).
