Commenting on the government's announcement today (Thursday) that its consultation on future UK airport capacity has been delayed, TUC General Secretary Brendan Barber said:

'Expanding Britain's airport capacity is absolutely vital to the future of our economy and ministers cannot afford to waste any more time dithering.

'A third runway at Heathrow will create jobs across the economy, from construction and manufacturing, to our fast-growing creative industries and tourism.

'While all new development needs to address the impact on the local environment, with 2.6 million people out of work and decent well-paid jobs in short supply, cracking on with a third runway should be a top priority for the government.'
