Commenting on the government’s announcement today (Thursday) that York and North Yorkshire are staying in Tier 2 restrictions, and following ONS data on Tuesday showing Yorkshire has experienced the highest quarterly rise in unemployment on record (29%), TUC Regional Secretary Bill Adams said:
“The government is not offering enough to keep workers and businesses afloat over Christmas.
“Without more support from the government, jobs will be lost and businesses will close.
“Ministers must act quickly and get extra support to the worst-hit industries. Local government needs a funding boost to help manage the impact. And ministers must help families too, by boosting sick pay to a real Living Wage so that people can afford to self-isolate and increasing universal credit.”
- The Trades Union Congress (TUC) exists to make the working world a better place for everyone. We bring together more than 5.5 million working people who make up our 48 member unions. We support unions to grow and thrive, and we stand up for everyone who works for a living.
