The LESE Race Relations Committee will be hosting their annual Irish History Month celebration.
2019 will be the Centenary of the Limerick Soviet and the beginnings of the War of Irish Independence, which many Irish migrant labourers in Britain supported. The Limerick Soviet was when the Limerick Trades Union Council self-declared a ‘soviet’ (ie a council of workers in this instance) in order to administer a strike against the imposition of British tanks and soldiers in Limerick City.
These topics will be covered by guest speakers:
Alan Heaney on "A child of the Troubles"
Austin Harney on "The Limerick Soviet and its aftermath"
Geoff Bell on "British Labour and the War of Irish Independence"
