About this Role

About us

The LGA is a politically-led, cross-party organisation that works on behalf of councils to ensure local government has a strong, credible voice with national government. We aim to influence and set the political agenda on the issues that matter to councils so they are able to deliver local solutions to national problems.

Within the LGA, the workforce team, consisting of 20+ staff, support councils, fire authorities and other related employers with a range of HR/OD and employment law issues from apprenticeships to wellbeing.  We are also responsible for the employer side of national collective bargaining covering over two million workers in local government, fire, education and police staff.

The role

This is a central role in the workforce team that has substantial variety and responsibility.  The Principal Adviser will lead on certain sectoral work (education, local government, fire, social care, police staff etc.) and oversee the work of specialists in OD support, employment law and negotiations in those areas.  They will also deputise for the Head of Workforce and have budget and line management responsibilities.  Building relationships with councillors, senior council officers, civil servants and trade union officials will be key to success, as is the ability to balance detail with an eye for the bigger picture.

The successful candidate will have experience of one of the team’s key areas of work:  OD or employee relations; and will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the sectors with which the team is involved.  Experience of working in a political environment would be an advantage, as would a history of successfully line managing individuals and teams.
