About this Role

We are currently seeking to fill a vacancy for a Network Operations Administrator in the National Administration Unit based in Paisley, Scotland.

The successful postholder will be responsible for all aspects of network and infrastructure (WAN and LAN) administration within GMB. This will include configuration and maintenance of servers (physical and virtual), administration and configuration of operating systems and user network accounts, ensuring the security and resilience of the network, and ensuring that procedures are in place for the regular testing of network facilities.

The successful candidate will:

  • Ensure that network controls and security/access rights are applied to the network as agreed with the IT Services and Delivery Manager
  • Ensure that an accurate hardware and software inventory is maintained
  • Establish requirements for upgrading server hardware and operating systems as necessary to support extended use of the systems, and oversee delivery of this implementation
  • Write and maintain documentation for all routine operational and recovery procedures relating to the main computer systems, databases and communications network
  • Be a flexible member of the IT Department supporting other members of the team in providing user support across the range of GMB IT systems.

Other tasks may be assigned by the Information Systems Director or National Administration Unit Director.

Key attributes and skills required: 

  • Educated to degree level with relevant experience of network administration/management
  • Technical skills and knowledge of configuration and management of a wide variety of operating systems and database platforms, Windows, MS SQL, Azure, o365, Backup technologies  
  • Experience in the use of network monitoring and management software, remote desktop and remote assistance software, VMware administration 
  • Good organisational and communication skills
  • Logically minded and technically adept
  • Ability to research new technologies and prepare reports and briefings
  • Willingness to undertake necessary training to support new developments
