About this Role

UNISON is the UK’s leading public services trade union, with over 1.3 million members working in the public sector, private, voluntary and community sectors and in the energy services. We employ approximately 1,200 staff, with around 370 at our national centre in Euston in central London and the remainder in our 12 regions across the UK, including Northern Ireland.

A challenging career opportunity exists at the country’s largest public sector trade union. It is based at UNISON’s award-winning building, situated in central London between Euston and Kings Cross.

This is a varied and responsible role which includes:

  • processing complaints about the union;
  • administering ballots for industrial action;
  • processing subject access requests under the GDPR.

Primarily you will be a skilled administrator with good written communication skills. Full training will be given on aspects of the law which cover this work.

You must be able to plan your work so that you can meet various deadlines required of the union by law. You will not be thrown off course if your priorities have to change during the day.

You will have excellent attention to detail and especially appreciate the need for this when dealing with subject access requests.

Your administrative skills will be excellent. You will understand the need to keep accurate records. You will not be put off by bulky files and will recognise that dealing with case files often involves you doing lots of photocopying.

You will be confident in using Microsoft software products especially Office and Outlook. You will be keen to learn to use UNISON’s own in house computer systems as well as Microsoft SharePoint.

You must be able to communicate clearly by telephone. In particular you must be confident, calm and professional in dealing with callers who have a complaint and who may be angry or distressed.

You will be able digest large amounts of written information; and write clear concise emails and letters to a wide audience, including members, senior managers and external bodies.

UNISON is a dynamic, progressive union, committed to equality. We encourage men and women of all ages, Black and minority ethnic groups, disabled people, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people to work with us.
