TUC statement of failed asylum seekers from Zimbabwe

The TUC welcomes the decision by the Home Office to suspend deportations to Zimbabwe of failed asylum seekers.

On 30 June 2005, the General Secretary, wrote to Charles Clarke, Home Secretary, drawing his attention to the plight of failed asylum seekers and requested reconsideration of the policy in view of the worsening crisis in Zimbabwe. The General Secretary added;

'The TUC has long-standing relations with the trade union movement in Zimbabwe and is well aware of the Government of Zimbabwe’s onslaught on the opposition and its campaign of violence and intimidation against its critics - and indeed anyone who gets in its way. The current 'clean up' operation, which consists in demolishing dwellings in areas where the Opposition enjoys overwhelming support, typifies the current regime’s approach to its own population. '

The TUC, through TUC Aid, has made an appeal to its affiliates for funds to support the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions in its efforts to protect and promote the trade union and human rights of workers.
